Afternoon drive to Arusha National Park for a short game drive with packed lunch. Return to your hotel for dinner. (B,L,D)

Day 3: TARANGIRE

After breakfast, morning departure for Tarangire National Park ( 120 km, 2 hrs). Game drive in the park followed by picnic lunch at a location within the park. Afternoon visit to a Masai village. A full day of game viewing in Tarangire National Park. Morning and afternoon game drives. Tarangire is well known for its elephant herds.

"Herds of up to 300 elephants scratch the dry river bed for underground streams, while migratory wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, impala, gazelle, hartebeest and eland crowd the shrinking lagoons. It's the greatest concentration of wildlife outside the Serengeti ecosystem". (B,L,D)

Day 5: LAKE MANYARA

After breakfast, drive to Lake Manyara National Park for our game drive. Picnic lunch within the park. Late afternoon drive to Ngorongoro for dinner and overnight. Ngorongoro Serena Lodge. (B,L,D)

"Stretching for 50km along the base of the rusty-gold 600-metre high Rift Valley escarpment, Lake Manyara is a scenic gem, with a setting extolled by Ernest Hemingway as "the loveliest I had seen in Africa". The compact game-viewing circuit through Manyara offers a virtual microcosm of the Tanzanian safari experience."

Day 6

After breakfast, descend into the crater for game viewing. Lunch in the crater. Return to the lodge for dinner. (B,L,D)

Day 7: OLDUPAI GORGE – SERENGETI

After breakfast, scenery will change dramatically as you go from the crater to the Serengeti Plains. We will start with Oldupai Gorge. From Wikipedia: "Oldupai Gorge is one of the most important paleoanthropological sites in the world and has been instrumental in furthering the understanding of early human evolution. This site was occupied by Homo habilis approximately 1.9 million years ago, Paranthropus boisei 1.8 million years ago, and Homo erectus 1.2 million years ago. Homo sapiens have occupied the site 17,000 years ago."

Wildlife viewing along the way. Overnight at Serengeti Serena Lodge. (B,L,D)

Day 8: SERENGETI

Sunrise game drive followed by 9 AM breakfast, followed by another game drive. Picnic lunch in the park. Afternoon game drive. Dinner and overnight at your hotel. (B,L,D)

It was 1913 and great stretches of Africa were still unknown to the white man when Stewart Edward White, an American hunter, set out from Nairobi. Pushing south, he recorded: "We walked for miles over burnt out country... Then I saw the green trees of the river, walked two miles more and found myself in paradise." He had found Serengeti. In the years since White's excursion under "the high noble arc of the cloudless African sky," Serengeti has come to symbolize paradise to many of us. The Maasai, who had grazed their cattle on the vast grassy plains for millennia had always thought so. To them it was Siringitu - "the place where the land moves on forever."

Day 9

A full day of game viewing in Serengeti National Park. Lunch, dinner & over-night at your hotel. (B,L,D)

Day 10

After breakfast, game drive as you exit Serengeti National Park. Continue to Lake Eyasi for dinner and overnight at Kisimangeda Tented Camp. B,L,D)

Day 11: LAKE EYASI

Visit to local bush tribes including the Hadza and Barbiag tribes, considered the last of the bushmen. Picnic lunch and drive back to Arusha. Late transfer to Kili airport for your flight home. (B,L)

Over 100 years ago when the stronger Masaii tribes moved into the Ngorongoro and Serengeti, the Datoga and other indigenous bushmen living there were pushed south. Many made Lake Eyasi and its surrounding bush and forests their home.

Amongst the acacia and doom palm forests at the north-east end of the lake, by a small lava outcropping, is located Kisima Ngeda farm. This owes its survival to fresh water springs in the area that allow grass and vegetables to grow.
