Day 3:BANGKOK-PHITSANULOKE

This morning the tour begins from Bangkok as we drive north (approximately 1 hour drive) to Bang Pa-In, a Royal Summer Palace set in the beautiful gardens. The Palace combines an exotic mixture of Thai and European architecture. After the visit, we proceed to the ancient city of Ayuthaya. Explore ruined temples and palaces and admire the extensive canal and river network which helped Ayuthaya to flourish. Lunch will be provided at local restaurant.

After lunch, drive (approximately 1 hour, 20 minutes) through scenic countryside to Lopburi, the former summer capital of Siam. See the magnificent stone carvings of Phra Prang Sam Yod , stop at the Kala Shrine of Sarn Prakarn which was a Buddhist sanctuary in the mid 13th century. Hundreds of monkeys have made this temple complex their home. Drive north to the town of Phitsanuloke (approximately 3 ½ hours). The shrine of Wat Mahathat in Phitsanuloke is venerated throughout Thailand.

Day 4:PHITSANULOKE-CHIANG RAI

After breakfast, visit Sukhothai (1 hour drive), the ancient capital of Thailand in the 13th century, explore the many ruined temples and monasteries. Further north, visit Sri Satchanalai (approx 2 hour drive), which was Sukhothai’s twin city. Lunch will be at local restaurant.

Afternoon drive (approximately 3 ½ hours)through rural Thailand and stop at small town of Phayao which dates back to the 11th century to enjoy refreshments beside a lake. Arrive Chiang Rai (approximately 1 hour and 15 minute drive), check-in at hotel.

Day 5:CHIANG RAI

Breakfast at Hotel

After breakfast, visit several hill tribe villages. Enjoy mountain views from Doi Mae Salong (approximately 1 hour and 15 minute drive), a Chinese settlement founded by Komintang soldiers who fled from China after Mao Tse Tung’s victory in1949. Return to the valley for lunch before driving to Mae Sai (approximately 1 hour drive), Thailand’s northernmost town near the Myanmar border. You can watch Thai and Myanmar locals walking across the bridge separating the two countries. From Mae Sai, drive to Golden Triangle (approximately ½ hour drive) where the Ruak and Mekong Rivers meet, enjoy view over Myanmar, Laos ,Thailand and the Mekong River. Visit Chiang Saen, where evidence of the orginal 13th century city can still be seen.

Day 6:CHIANG RAI-CHIANG MAI

Breakfast at Hotel

Depart from Chiang Rai to Chiang Mai (approximately 2 ½ hour drive) stopping on the way at Mae Ka Chan,famous for a hot spring. Lunch will be served a local restaurant. Continue the drive to Chiang Mai and before arriving in the town, stop to visit the hilltop temple of Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep which offers spectacular views of the Chiang Mai area.

Tonight, enjoy the northern Thai dinner known as Kantok. Traditional dishes will be served while watching dancers performing a series of folk stories. Colourful dressed hilltribes will perform their own traditional dances after dinner.

Day 7: CHIANG MAI

Breakfast at Hotel

Depart from hotel for the drive through agricultural Thai countryside along Mae Taeng Valley to Elephant Nature Park. You will hear the personal stories of our rescued elephants as told by expert guides. You will learn about the problems elephants face in Southeast Asia, as how Elephant Nature Park is helping in the treatment, and care of Thailand's dwindling elephant population.

Feeding time: After unloading and distributing the fruit treats you will have a chance to feed the elephants from the viewing platform.

Lunch: A sumptuous and varied buffet follows.

Bathing Time: Walk with the staff to the river that skirts the park

After learning how to safely and properly bathe an elephant, plunge right in and help scrub these giants as they splash around. If going into the river is not for you then watch the elephants bathe and play while you stay dry on the sandy shore. Around 5pm it’s time for goodbyes to the elephants and to Elephant Nature Park before drive back to Chiang Mai.

DAY-BY-DAY ITINERARY

Day 1: Chiang Mai – Elephant Nature Park - Palong Village

Pick up at Chiang Mai Airport or at hotel in Chiang Mai City, drive to Mae Rim. Enjoy the spectacular scenery along the way. Then visit an Orchid Nursery to see a large collection of more than 50 different types of colorful exotic year-round-bloom orchids. Drive through the Thai countryside along Mae Taeng Valley to Elephant Nature Park. You will hear the personal stories of the rescued elephants as told by expert guides. You will learn about the problems elephants face in Southeast Asia, as how Elephant Nature Park is helping in the treatment, and care of Thailand's dwindling elephant population.

Day 2: Palong - Trekking - Chiang Dao

Breakfast at the Village.

Trek to the Lahu village of Phang Tong is located. ( 30-45 minutes). Continue walking along a mountain side to the Red Karen hill-tribe of Baan Pha Lai from where you have a spectacular view of beautiful mountain. (1.30-2.00 hrs)

After lunch, walk through the hill-tribe farm and the beautiful scenery to visit the Lisu hill-tribe, then continue to Baan Huay E-Po where the Akha hill-tribe is located (30-45 minutes). From there, return transfer to local open air-truck to Baan Pang Dang-Nok where the Palong hill-tribe lives. The tribe is known for its unique cultural dress, which includes many belts.

Then, visit the Buatong water fall, one of the most beautiful this area with its clean and clear water. Then proceed to Chiang Dao Hill Resort.

Day 3: Chiang Dao - Doi Mae Salong - Chiang Rai

Depart to visit Wat Tham Tab Tao has been an ancient place of worship for hundreds of years at Baan Tham Tab Tao village in Chai Prakan district, Chiang Mai. The name of the temple comes from the Northern Thai language. The age of Wat Tham Tab Tao is not known, but the nine meter tall statue of Buddha built in Ayutthaya-style is believed to date back to 1592. Tham Tab Tao cave is separated in two parts; Tham Jaeng is the big cave, there are statues of Buddha, the Big Buddha statue, pagoda, old statue of Buddha, sculptured Buddha, and small sized Buddha statues placed inside it. After exploring the caves, have lunch at Thaton. After lunch, drive to Doi Mae Salong to see a Chinese refugee village and visit Tea Plantation. Arrive Chiang Rai in the late afternoon.

Day 4: Mai Sai – Chiangsaen - Golden Triangle and Chiang Rai

Breakfast at hotel.

Depart from hotel and drive to Mae Sai in the northern most part of Thailand. From there, travel to the infamous Golden Triangle, the place where the borders of Thailand, Laos and Myanmar (Burma) meet. This is a place known for magnificent mountain scenery, ruins of ancient settlements, historic sites, Buddhist shrines and ethnic villages. Immediately following the exploration of the border area, take a boat ride along the majestic Mekong River to ancient Chiang Saen. After enjoying a quick lunch, transfer to Chiang Rai Airport or back to Chiang Mai.
